Abstract
An olefin is polymerized using a Ziegler catalyst, in the presence of hydrogen and an organic hydroxy compound which is a hydrogenactive compound which are added either to the polymerization zone or to a component supplied thereto, the amount of hydrogen being at least 0,001 molar per cent of the olefin and the amount of the hydroxy compound being between 5 and 200 molar per cent of the catalyst. Specified catalysts are compounds of a transition metal, e.g. titanium tetrachloride with reducing agents which are Group 1, 2 or 3 metals, or their alloys, their organo-metallic compounds or hydrides, or the organo-metallic compounds or hydrides of tin or lead or of boron. Aluminium trialkyls and the dialkyl halides are especially suitable. Specified organic hydroxy compounds are methanol, ethanol, the propanols and butanols, benzyl alcohol, polyhydroxy aliphatic alcohols, the polyhydroxy phenols (see Specification 851,112). The polymerization preferably takes place continuously in the presence of a solvent, although it may also take place as a batch process. Very pure olefin is preferably used. Specifications 799,392, 799,823, 801,823, 810,023, 819,867 and 820,263 also are referred to.
