Abstract
Olefines e.g. ethylene, are polymerized by the low-pressure process with the aid of a Ziegler catalyst and in the presence of a minor proportion relative to the olefine polymerized of a boron halide which may be added to the polymerization zone or to a component supplied to the zone. The Ziegler catalyst comprises two components, one component being a compound of a metal of Group IVa, Va, VIa or VIII or of Mn and the other component being a reducing agent selected from the metals, alloys, hydrides and organometallic compounds of the metals of group I, II and III, tin and lead or an organo-boron compound. The A component may be titanium tri- or tetrachloride and the B component may be an aluminium trialkyl or alkyl halide, a Grignard reagent or a magnesium or zinc alkyl. The preferred boron halide is the trifluoride. The polymerization may be carried out in the presence of an inert liquid medium such as iso-octane or a light petroleum distillate and the polymerization may be carried out by a batchwise or continuous process. The function of the boron halide is to control the molecular weight of the polymer. Specifications 799,392, 799,823, 801,031, 803,557, 815,112, 815,113, 815,310, 819,867, 820,263 and 820,264 are referred to.ALSO:A catalyst for the polymerization of olefines comprises a Ziegler catalyst and a minor proportion, relative to the olefin polymerized, of a boron halide. The Ziegler catalyst comprises two components, one being a compound of a metal of Group IVA, VA, VIA or VIII or of Mn and the other being a reducing agent selected from the metals, alloys, hydrides and organometallic compounds of the metals of Group I, II and III, tin and lead or an organo-boron compound. Components specified are titanium tri- and tetrachlorides, aluminium trialkyls, alkyl aluminium halides, Grignard reagents and magnesium and zinc alkyls. The preferred boron halide is the trifluoride and the polymerization is preferably carried out in an inert liquid medium, e.g. iso-octane or a light petroleum distillate. Specifications 799,392, 799,823, 801,031, 803,557, 815,112, 815,113, 815,310, 819,867, 820,263 and 820,264 are referred to.
