867,184. Granulating processes. CIBA Ltd. April 28, 1958 [April 26, 1957], No. 13480/58. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VI] Pharmaceutical ingredients (see Group VI) are granulated before being tableted by treatment in a granulating apparatus with a vapour which condenses on the mass, the moistened mass being then granulated and vacuum dried. The vapour used may be, for example, a hydro-alcoholic mixture, acetone, chloroform or ether. The tablet ingredients are first blended in a rotatable vessel 1. With valves 4 and 5 closed, the liquid in a jacketed vessel 3 is boiled, the valve 4 is opened, and the vapour passes through a filter 12 of porous stainless steel, whilst the vessel 1 is rotated. When sufficient vapour has passed over, the valve 4 is closed and the valve 5 is opened. The vessel 1 is evacuated (whilst still in rotation), until all volatile liquid is removed leaving a dry, granular mass which is ready for screening and tableting. For operation under " vacuum conditions," which allows the use of lower temperatures, valves 4 and 5 are opened after the blending and the system evacuated. Valve 5 is closed, and the liquid heated allowing the vapour to pass into vessel 1 as before, the remainder of the process being unaltered.
