Abstract

The invention comprises alkoxy silanes of the formula RSi(OR1)3 and disiloxanes of the formula [R(R1O)2Si]2O, where R is an alkyl group of 8 to 20 carbon atoms and R1 is a branched chain alkyl group of 4 to 20 carbon atoms in which the branching occurs at the carbon atom beta to the oxygen, the total number of carbon atoms being 30 to 50 in the silanes and 32 to 70 in the siloxanes. The silanes may be prepared by reacting a silane RSiCl3 with an alcohol R1OH, or by reacting an alkoxy silane (R1O)3SiH with an olefin having the same number of carbon atoms as the desired R group, preferably in the presence of a catalyst such as chloroplatinic acid. The disiloxanes may be prepared by reacting two mols of alcohol with one mol of chlorosilane to give R (R1O)2SiCl which is then hydrolysed. The examples describe the preparation of tris-2-ethylbutoxydodecylsilane, tris-2-ethylhexoxyoctadecylsilane, tris-2, 2-dimethylpentoxydodecylsilane, tris-2-ethylhexoxydodecylsilane (from tri-2-ethylhexoxysilane and dodecene), bis-octyl-tetra-2-ethylbutoxydisiloxane, bis-dodecyltetra-2-ethylbutoxydisiloxane, bis-dodecyltetra-2-ethylhexoxydisiloxane and sec-octyl (bis-2-ethylbutoxy) (2-octyl-1-dodecanoxy) silane. Uses: as lubricants and hydraulic fluids, for which purpose they may be mixed with organic esters, high viscosity ethylmethylsiloxanes (cf. Specification 755,041) and other additives. Specification 688,166 also is referred to.ALSO:Lubricating and hydraulic fluid compositions comprise an alkoxy silane of the formula RSi(OR1)3, or a disiloxane of the formula [R(R1O)2Si]2O, where R is an alkyl group of 8 to 20 carbon atoms, and R1 is a branched chain alkyl group of 4 to 20 carbon atoms in which the branching occurs at the carbon atom beta to the oxygen, the total number of carbon atoms being 30 to 50 in the silanes and 32 to 70 in the disiloxanes, together with an additive which may be an organic ester such as octyl or 2-ethylhexyl sebacate or a high viscosity ethylmethylsiloxane of the type mentioned in Specification 755,041. Other additives which may be present are oxidationand corrosion-inhibitors and flame snuffers. Specification 688,166 also is referred to.
