Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises a liquid organo-polysiloxane containing an average of 1.9 to 2.67 organic groups per silicon atom, and from 0.5 to 25 per cent., by weight of the siloxane, of an aliphatic hydrocarbon substituted with both chlorine and fluorine atoms. The organic radicals of the siloxane are preferably hydrocarbon, and include alkyl radicals, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl; alicyclic radicals, e.g. cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl; aryl radicals, e.g. phenyl, diphenyl, anthracyl and naphthyl; aralkyl radicals, e.g. tolyl and xylyl; and alkenyl radicals, but any of these hydrocarbon radicals may contain substituents thereon such as halogens. The aliphatic hydrocarbons substituted with chlorine and fluorine atoms generally contain from 2 to 20 carbon atoms, and particularly useful compounds are 1, 1, 2, 2, 3-pentachloro-1, 3, 3-trifluoropropane, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3-pentachloro-3, 3-difluoropropane, 1, 2, 3, 3,-tetrachloro-1, 1-difluoropropene-2, 2, 3-dichloro-1, 1, 1, 4, 4, 4-hexafluorobutylene-2 and polymers known as "fluorolubes," but many other compounds are listed. The compositions may contain other additives such as soaps, e.g. lithium stearate and lithium hydroxy stearate, oxidation inhibitors and organic diesters such as di-(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate. In an example a lubricating composition comprises a methyl phenyl polysiloxane oil containing terminal trimethyl silyl groups, 5 per cent. of fluorolube foreshot, 1 per cent. of CH3(CH2)15S-CH2 COOH and 2 per cent. of a phosphite ester, the percentages being by weight of the siloxane oil. In an example 5 per cent. by weight of Fluorolube foreshot is added to a methyl phenyl polysiloxane oil containing terminal trimethyl silyl groups. There is also added to the oil 1 per cent. by weight of CH3 (CH2)15 S-CH2COOH and 2 per cent. by weight of a phosphite ester known as OS-1666.
