866,850. Ornamenting. MALKIN & CO. Ltd., F. Feb. 16, 1960 [Feb. 18, 1959], No. 5535/59. Class 93. A decorating device for the inner surfaces of hollow articles such as cups has a decorating surface normally of flat or relatively flat contour so that it can be easily coated with the decorative medium, means being provided for applying pressure to the central region of the surface by which it is segmentally expanded into the desired contour to press on the inside surface of the article. As shown in the expanded form, the device consists of a disc 10 integral with a sleeve 11 through which slides a plunger 12 carrying a ring 14, a ring 16 being attached to the front face of the disc 10. Attached to the ring 16 is a rubber or like pad 19 having a number of radial cuts leaving segmental pads carrying a flexible rubber design-bearing sheet 18 and also a continuous marginal ring 19a attached to the ring 16 directly or through flexible metal backings 20 acting as hinges. The plunger 12 carries a collar 22 between which and the sleeve 11 is fitted a spring 28. The cups to be decorated are placed in a chuck having a body 30 with a cavity having a recess to accommodate the cup handle C<SP>1</SP> and a rubber lining 32. The chuck has a central rod 33 fastened to a bench top 34 by a nut 35, and the rod 33 may have a duct 36 leading to a suction pump. Sliding in a bore 27 in the plunger 12 and urged outwardly by a spring 28 is a stem 26 carrying a rubber or like decorating pad 25. The decorating surfaces 18, 25 are coated with ink, a metallic solution, or ceramic colour by pressing against a travelling belt so coated, and the device is applied to the cup in the chuck, the pad 25 first contacting the bottom of the cup and the member 18 being then squeezed against the sides of the cup. The device may be applied to the cups either manually or mechanically.
