Abstract

<PICT:0866586/III/1> Binary gas mixtures suitable for calibrating gas analysers are prepared by mixing one of the gases with a mixture of known composition of the other of said gases with an auxiliary gas, determining the concentration of the auxiliary gas in the resultant ternary mixture and removing the auxiliary gas from the latter mixture. The invention may be applied to the production of mixtures of methane or other hydrocarbon with a rare gas or of nitrogen or other inert gas with argon or other rare gas, nitrogen/argon being exemplified in relation to the embodiment illustrated in the drawing. Commercial grade argon is passed through a safety valve 21, vessel 1 containing manganous oxide (to remove oxygen), phosphorus pentoxide tube 5 (to remove water), cooled tube 6 containing a molecular seive zeolite (to remove nitrogen), a metering section containing a water lute 13 and capillary tube 12 and a fine adjustment valve 15 by which it is introduced into a stream of air (or other nitrogen/oxygen mixture of known composition) under pressure controlled by water lute 14 and the amount of oxygen in the mixture is determined in galvanic cell oxygen analyser 20. The ternary gas mixture then passes to manganous oxide tube 16 to leave the desired binary nitrogen/argon mixture, the composition of which can be calculated. Specification 785,302 is referred
