Abstract

1446637 Separating gases by diffusion DYNASCIENCES CORP 6 Dec 1973 [2 Jan 1973] 56581/73 Heading B1L [Also in Division G1] A probe 40 filters solids from the gas to be tested and a heated conduit 42 leads to the lower chamber of cell 10 in the oven 86 which maintains the gas and the cell at a constant temperature above the dew point. A carrier gas flows through conduit 130 and passes across the membrane in the upper chamber of the cell to convey a gas suitable for sampling and testing i.e. free of water vapour. Scrubber 138 purifies the carrier gas of contaminants which might affect the analysis. Calibration gases can be introduced via valve 70. The system may also be used as a source of specified concentrations of particular gases at a particular temperature. The invention is particularly applicable to stack gases containing oxides of sulphur carbon and nitrogen. Materials for membrane 32 (Fig. 4) are exemplified. A diffusion cell 10 has upper and lower body sections 12 and 14 secured together to form with the membrane 32 upper and lower diffusion chambers 24, 30. Non resilient pads 35 support the membrane. The gas to be tested enters inlet port 20 and any undiffused gas is vented at 22. The carrier gas enters conduit 42 at 26 and passes to analyser by 28.
