Abstract

d-a -Tocopheryl hydrogen succinate is prepared by reacting together 1 molecular proportion of d-a -tocopherol and from 1 to 3 molecular proportions of succinic anhydride at elevated temperatures in the presence of 0,05 to 0,50 molecular proportions of a tertiary base, acidifying a solution of the reaction product and separating the formed d-a -tocopheryl hydrogen succinate by crystallisation. The term "tertiary base" is defined as a compound which is a liquid nitrogen base boiling above 85 DEG C. and which yields a stable, watersoluble hydrochloride; such bases may be trialkylamines, di-alkyl-anilines, pyridine, alkylated pyridines, quinoline and isoquinoline. The d-a -tocopherol may be chemically pure or in the form of a concentrate containing at least 40% of the vitamin. From 1 to 3 volumes of a solvent such as benzene, toluene, xylene, light petroleum fraction boiling between 80 DEG and 160 DEG C., diisopropyl ether and higher aliphatic ethers may be added, and the process conducted at 80 DEG -150 DEG C. After the reaction the mixture is taken up in a solvent, washed with hydrochloric acid and water, evaporated to low bulk and then purified from light petroleum at low temperature. Specification 639,011 is referred to.
