Abstract

<PICT:0866332/III/1> A curved glass sheet for use as a window closure, automobile windscreen or the like has at least a portion thereof having a total energy transmissivity below 50%, due to said portion having a transparent non-iridescent metal oxide film having a thickness of less than 80 millimicrons thereon. The sheet may be prepared by applying to a flat glass sheet or to a portion thereof a metal oxide film-forming composition such as a solution containing cobalt acetate, then heating the sheet to its softening temperature so as simultaneously to bend it and form a metal oxide film thereon. The composition may be applied to one or both sides of the sheet by means of spray nozzles inclined at an acute angle to the sheet which may be either horizontally or vertically disposed. Ferric and nickel acetates may also be included in the film-forming composition. As shown (Fig. 8) two vertically movable spray guns 30 are provided with baffle plates 38 to delineate one boundary of the spray. A carriage 40 fitted with tongs 44 to grip the glass sheet 10 is provided with a cam rail 46 which engages the spray guns as the carriage moves past them and varies the height of the guns so that the edge of the sprayed area approximates to a straight line when the sheet is bent to shape after spraying. Alternatively the sheet 10 may be moved horizontally under the spray guns (Fig. 11) a baffle 66 being provided to avoid coating composition dripping on the glass.
