Abstract

866,320. Current and voltage measurements. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 8, 1957 (Aug. 20, 1956], No. 25444/56. Class 37. Apparatus to determine the standing wave ratio in electromagnetic transmission means 3 comprises: first means 9 for deriving a signal dependent in amplitude upon an incident wave propagated along the transmission means; second means 10 for deriving a signal dependent in amplitude upon the reflected portion of the incident wave; and third means 13 which is set to bring the amplitude of one signal into a given relationship with that of the other, whereby the setting of the third means provides the required measure of the standing wave ratio. Klystron oscillator 2, modulated by a 3 kc/s. square wave frequency, is coupled to waveguide 3, wave-guide 4 which is under test, wave-guide 5 and matched load 6; the characteristics of wave-guides 3 and 5, and of matched load 6 being such that standing waves produced in wave-guide 3 depend solely upon the reflection characteristics of wave-guide 4. Direc. tional couplers 9, 10 each comprising two arms, one of which is terminated by a matched load 11, 12, are selectively coupled by wave-guide switch 14 to a coaxial cable 16; and the resulting signal, demodulated by rectifier 17, is selectively amplified at 18 and fed to meter 19. The coupler 9 derives a signal from that transmitted by oscillator 2; the coupler 10 derives a signal from that reflected by wave-guide 4; and these signals are equalized in amplitude by appropriately setting attenuator 13; equality being indicated by identical readings of meter 19 for either position of the switch 14; and the required setting providing a measure of the standing wave ratio in wave-guide 3. The frequency of oscillator 2 is adjustable and is measured by cavity wavemeter 8; and attenuator 7 enables the energy output of the oscillator to be varied. Specification 866,321 is referred to.
