In an apparatus for determining the attenuation produced by a test piece comprising a component part of an H. F. transmission line system 3 such as a waveguide, a microwave source 1 is connected via a known loss directional coupler 4 to a waveguide 2 and to the waveguide system 3 containing the test piece, in parallel. The energy applied to the test piece is modulated at 5. A hybrid coupler 7 adds the signals from the guide 2 and the test piece and supplies them to a rectifier system 10, 11 producing a unidirectional signal of amplitude dependent upon the attenuation produced by the test piece. Arrangements 14-18 measure the amplitude of the unidirectional signal. The measurement is effected by passing the output to a calibrated attenuator 15 which is adjusted to provide a standard reading on a meter 18, and then inserting a unit of known attenuation in the place of the test piece and determining the attenuation required to produce the same reading. The modulating arrangement 5 may be a variable impedance PIN diode mounted in a waveguide, to which a square wave modulating voltage may be applied. The hybrid coupler 7 may be a 3db or magic Tee coupler.
