Abstract

The invention comprises a mixture of cis and transisomers of esters of p-tert-butyl cyclohexanol where the ester group is derived from an aliphatic acid containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and where the mixture contains predominantly the cis isomer. The mixture may be obtained by esterifying with an acid or with a functional derivative e.g. an acid anhydride, a mixture of cis and trans p-tert butyl cyclohexanols containing predominantly the cis isomer. This mixture of alcohols may be obtained by hydogenating p-tert butyl-phenol over a rhodium on carbon catalyst or by heating the equilibrium mixture, which contains 70% trans isomer and which may be obtained by hydrogenating p-tert. butyl-phenol over a nickel catalyst, with an alkaline isomerising agent e.g. an alkali metal alkoxide or hydroxide, and continuously distilling off the lower boiling cis isomer. The examples describe the preparation of the acetate, propionate, butyrate and isobutyrate.
