865,405. Coin-freed vending apparatus. SOUTHERN INDUSTRIES (CROYDON) Ltd, and ROUNSIVELL, W. A. Jan. 28, 1960 [Dec. 31, 1958], No. 42169/58. Class 27 A delivery drum 3 is fast with a toothed wheel 5 which is engaged by a locking detent 8 pivoted on a lever 12, by a loading pawl 9 pivoted on the detent and by a second locking detent 10 on a lever 35 pivoted at 33 to a fixed part 2. Insertion of a coin between rollers 15, 16 tilts a lever 13 against the action of a spring 17 and, through a pin and slot connection, tilts the lever 12 about the drum axis so that the detent 8 is withdrawn and the pawl 9 moved back over one or more teeth of wheel 5 to come to rest in hooking engagement with a requisite tooth. The drum is thus loaded by the spring 17 and when the coin has passed the rollers and through a testing device and down a shoot 36 it tilts the lever 35 to withdraw the second detent 10 and allow the drum to advance one delivery step. The return of the lever 12 is limited by a stop 18 and a pawl 38 on the detent 10 holds the wheel 5 steady during the loading action and prevents reverse movement of the wheel. The drum may have pockets 22 from which articles 21 are delivered through a slot 20 in a part-cylindrical plate 19 or may feed striplike articles, such as postage stamps, from a spool.
