Abstract

864,982. Washing-machines. ELLIS, C. I. A. Dec. 28, 1959 [Oct. 17, 1958], No. 33149/58. Class 138 (2). Rinsing water is supplied to a washing- machine until the pH value of liquid in or discharged from the machine reaches a predetermined value. The invention is applied to an electro-pneumatically controlled machine to which liquid is supplied continuously during washing, from a tank 2. The pH responsive device 36 may be located in a trough 37 into which liquid overflows through weir holes 24 in the machine, but the device 36 may be in the machine itself. Water for washing is supplied to tank 2 and for rinsing to the machine 1 through air-operated valves 11, 15, respectively. Suitable quantities of bleach, alkali or soap solution are supplied to tank 2 from tanks 3, 4, 5 through a flow-meter 6. The amount of water supplied to tank 2 is controlled by a switch 34 connected to a solenoid 33 and level control elements 35. While tank 2 is being filled the clothes are given an initial wetting. A pilot light 19 indicates when the desired level in tank 2 is reached. By means of a switch 12 a valve 20 is opened to supply the washing liquid to the machine and an indicator light 17 shows washing is in progress. Heating is effected by steam injected through injectors 23 under control of a thermostat 26. When tank 2 is empty dip-rods 30 are exposed, a solenoid 14 is energized, valves 20, 22 are closed and rinsing commences, as shown by an indicator light 21. A further light 31 indicates when a master switch 32 has been operated.
