Abstract

864,818. Pressure-sensitive adhesive materials. SMITH & NEPHEW Ltd., T. J. Sept. 4, 1959 [Sept. 16, 1958], No. 29596/58. Class 140. A pressure-sensitive adhesive sheet material comprises a sheet support of polymeric plastic material, a tie-coat comprising a graft copolymer of alkyl methacrylate and natural rubber, and a coating of pressure-sensitive adhesive composition thereon containing as its essential ingredients an elastomer and a resin. The graft copolymer may contain from 30 to 50% by weight of polymerized alkyl methacrylate and may be a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and natural rubber. The tie coat may also contain a resin which when the sheet material is regenerated cellulose may be a watersoluble polymer, e.g. polyvinyl pyrrolidone. The tie-coat may be omitted from pressuresensitive adhesive sheet material comprising a sheet support composed of hydrophobic polymeric plastic material and a pressure-sensitive adhesive composition containing as its essential ingredients an elastomer and a resin in which said elastomer comprises a graft copolymer of alkyl methacrylate and natural resin. Examples of polymeric plastic materials are plasticized or unplasticized polyvinyl chloride, polyesters of terephthalic acid with dihydric alcohols such as ethylene glycol, and polyethylene whose surface has been treated to increase surface polarity by one of the following methods :-electrostatic discharge, surface halogenation, ultra-violet light or passage over a hot flame.
