Abstract

<PICT:0864768/III/1> In the production of deuterium-enriched hydrogen or ammonia by contacting hydrogen with a counter-current of liquid ammonia containing a homogeneous catalyst in a dual temperature isotopic exchange process, the deuterium-depleted H2 leaving the cold tower is regenerated by contacting with steam of natural deuterium content in the presence of a catalyst. As shown liquid NH3 containing potassamide and a counter-current of H2 are passed continuously in series through cold and hot towers working at 50 atms. and-60 DEG C. and 30 DEG C., respectively. Heat is added at X and withdrawn at O in the circuits possibly by interlinking. Enriched hydrogen is withdrawn at B and passed to distillation at-225 DEG C., whence a highly-enriched fraction is recovered and combined with O2 to form heavy water, and a depleted fraction is passed into the H2 cycle. The H2 is regenerated by contact with steam at 550 DEG C. before return to the hot tower. Alternatively, enriched NH3 may be withdrawn at A and distilled to isolate an enriched fraction.
