Abstract
864,626. Transmitting mechanical power. BLISS CO., E. W. Aug. 6, 1957 [Aug. 30, 1956], No. 24715/57. Addition to 807,654. Class 38 (4). In a flywheel and electromagnetic clutch unit as described in the parent Specification the functions of the A.C. and D.C. are reversed so that the A.C. gives a reverse accelerating torque and the D.C. gives a decelerating torque. In addition the unit can be arranged to give both directions of rotation to the output shaft by reversing the order of application of the A.C. and D.C. to the windings. The Specification also describes a programme control system giving two directions of rotation. When the flywheel is started from rest, a starting signal over a line 262 energizes an accelerating relay 264 applying A.C. to the induction windings, the signal also de-energizing a clutching relay 266 and energizing a brake relay 268 which holds the driven member stationary through a holding means 207. At a given speed a speed-sensitive means 230 de-energizes relay 264 and the flywheel coasts. A programme means 240 bypasses means 230 through relay 274 which energizes the D.C. windings and the brake relay 268 is released, thus the output shaft rotates negatively until a retarding torque trip 244, which may be a limit switch, de-energizes relay 274, and actuates clutching relay 266 which slows down the output shaft. At zero speed, or at some determined machine position, relay 266 is released and brake relay 268 energized. A selector switch 254, and associated switches 256, 258 and 260 may be thrown to the other positive output torque position, rendering positive output torque programme means 276 effective. A signal from means 276 over line 284 releases acceleration relay 280 and brake relay 282 also actuates clutch relay 286 thus decelerating the flywheel and accelerating the output shaft. A retarding torque trip 288 also acts similarly to trip 244 releasing clutch relay 286 and energizing relay 280. After the output shaft has come to rest or at some other determined position the holding means 207 is energized through a relay 282. The flywheel member may be additionally driven by an electric motor. The clutching action may be performed by a separate D.C. winding separately energized or this winding may be energized in combination with the induction windings. The flywheel and driven members may be concentric or in parallel planes. Specification 864,627 is referred to.
