Abstract
864,620. Centrifugal pumps. CIBA Ltd. July 23, 1957 [July 27, 1956], No. 23307/57. Class 110 (1). A submersible centrifugal pump 26 is contained in a vessel 13, and a suction pipe 31 extends downwardly from a point near the upper wall of the vessel above the level of the pump and above the level of a shaft bearing 24, which is thus lubricated by the liquid being pumped. A delivery pipe 28 connected tangentially to the pump casing is continued outside the vessel 13 by a pipe 20. During operation of the pump, the vessel 13 is full of liquid. When the pump is stopped, liquid flows back from the pipe 20 to keep the vessel 13 charged with liquid. If the pipe 20 is not of sufficient volume for this purpose, it can be connected to a receptacle of sufficient capacity. When the air within the pipe 20 reaches a small opening 29, the air passes to a dome 30 above the suction pipe 31 and interrupts the siphoning of liquid from the vessel 13. An extension 18 of the suction pipe extends towards the bottom of the container (not shown) from which the liquid is being pumped. The vessel 13 may be arranged within the container, being suspended from the underside of the top cover of the container by means of the pipe 20 and a tubular enclosure 21 for the driving-shaft 16. The driving-motor and an upper bearing for the shaft 16 are mounted above the top cover. Alternatively, the vessel 13 may be mounted above the container.
