Abstract

864,483. Release coatings; laminates. ADHESIVE TAPES Ltd. Feb. 12, 1959 [Feb. 12, 1958], No. 4673/58. Class 140. A web has a coating of pressure-sensitive adhesive on one side thereof and either on the other side or on an interlining web, a release coating which comprises as an active release agent a polymer of a vinyl alkyl ether, the alkyl radical being normal and at least twelve carbon atoms long. The polymer may contain in addition to the vinyl alkyl ether, a copolymerizable monomer, which may be polar, in the proportion alkyl groups: monomer groups of 3: 1 to 10: 1, any n-alkyl groups which are over eleven carbon atoms long and present in the aforesaid monomer are all of the same chain length as the alkyl radicals in the ether. The monomer may be maleic acid, maleic anhydride, a maleic ester, acrylic or methacrylic acid, acrylic or methacrylic ester, or a vinyl ester. The release coating may comprise an organic di-isocyanate, e.g. toluene-2,4-diisocyanate, bonding aid and other film-formers, e.g. polyvinyl acetal and polymethylmethacrylate. Specified adhesives contain natural and synthetic rubbers, e.g. butyl rubber, polyisobutylene, polymers of vinyl ethyl and isobutyl ethers, and acrylic polymers. Specified release agents are polyvinyl octadecyl ether, polyvinyl behenyl ether, and copolymers thereof. The webs and interliners may be formed of vinyl polymers, polyesters, polythene, cellulosic films, e.g. regenerated cellulose, and other hydrophilic films.
