Abstract

A pressure-sensitive adhesive composition capable of keying on to a polypropylene or polystyrene substrate comprises a natural rubber latex wherein the tack is controlled by the presence of an aqueous, non-cross-linked addition polymer emulsion, the weight of addition polymer being in the range of 20 to 80% of the total solids material present, the polymer being incompatible with the rubber and non-tacky. The addition polymer may be a homopolymer, copolymer, or terpolymer of styrene, methacrylate ester, or acrylate ester, optionally cotaining a polyethylene wax. The composition may contain antioxidant, surface-active agents, tack agents and anti-tack agents.ALSO:Polypropylene and polystyrene film are coated with an adhesive composition comprising a natural rubber latex and, as tack-controlling agent, an aqueous, non-crosslinked addition polymer emulsion, the weight of addition polymer being 20-80% of the total solids present, and the polymer being incompatible with the rubber and non-tacky. Suitable polymers are polybutyl acrylate, polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, acrylate/methacrylate copolymers, acrylate/styrene copolymers, and terpolymers of styrene/methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate. The composition may contain antioxidant, surface active agent, tack agent, and an anti-tack agent, e.g. polyethylene wax. Thickening agents such as carboxymethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose casein, ethylene oxide polymers and water soluble acrylate polymers.
