Abstract
Impure uranium is refined by melting it in a fused bath comprising an alkali metal halide and an alkaline earth metal halide, maintaining the temperature of the bath above the melting point of uranium, allowing the molten purified uranium to coalesce and removing it from the bath. The salt bath preferably comprises an alkali metal acid fluoride, such as potassium acid fluoride, and an alkaline earth metal halide, such as barium chloride. Removal of volatile impurities is assisted by maintaining a vacuum or a flow of an inert gas over the bath.
