Abstract
864,362. Electro-medical apparatus. INDUSTRIAL & MEDICAL ELECTRONICS Ltd., and LIGHTWOOD, R. Oct. 30, 1959 [Oct. 30, 1958], No. 34758/58. Class 81 (2). Apparatus for producing a pulse for defibrillation comprises means for charging a condenser which is subsequently disconnected from the charging source and connected to the patient, through whom it is partially discharged to provide the pulse. Timing means is provided for limiting the duration of the pulse. When power is supplied to the transformer T1, the condenser C2 is charged through rectifier W3, but closure of a key S3 causes energization of a relay A/3, the contacts A1, A2 of which disconnect the condenser from the supply and connect it to the output terminals a1, a2. At the same time a further contact A3 connects the power supply through rectifier W2 to condensers C3 . . . C8, in series with relay B/1. The initial charging surge energizes the relay B/1 which subsequently releases when the condenser charging rate falls. Consequently contact B1 is at first closed, to connect the condenser C2 to the patient, and then opened, to terminate the pulse, after an interval determined by the setting of switch S6, by means of which the number of parallel-connected condensers C3 . . . C8 is selected. When the switch S3 is released, relay A/3 reconnects condenser C2 to the charging circuit and contact A3 discharges the pulse timing condensers through R7. The magnitude of the pulse administered is determined by the transformer tapping switch S2.
