Abstract

A method of treating minerals comprises subjecting the mineral in the form of discrete particles to the influence of sonic energy of an intensity greater than 150 decibels and a frequency from 0.5 to 3.5 KC per second, whereby the particle size is reduced. Preferably, the particle size is reduced until a major portion of the mineral is less than 2 microns in size and the resulting particles are of spheroidal shape. In examples quoted, kaolin is p treated while suspended in an air stream, the sonic energy applied being of an intensity from about 155 to 165 decibels and a frequency from about 1.3 to 1.8 KC per second. As minerals which may be treated, mention is made of various clays, either natural or calcined, e.g. kaolin, and specifically, calcined kaolin, and also various hydrous aluminium silicates, shale, dolomite, calcite CaCO3, gay-lussite CaCO3.Na2CO3. 5H2O, glauberite Na2SO4, CaSO4, anhydrite CaSO4, gypsum CaSO4.2H2O, aragonite CaCO3, borite BaSO4, magnesite MgCO3, talc, titanium dioxide TiO2 lithopone, calcium, sulphite CaSO3. 1/2 H2O, whiting precipitated calcium carbonate diatomaceous earth, satin white, zinc sulphide zinc oxide. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 696,799.ALSO:A method of treating mineral comprises subjecting the mineral in the form of discrete particles to the influence of sonic energy of an intensity greater than 150 decibels and a frequency from 0.5 to 3.5 k/c per second, whereby the particle size is reduced. Reference is made to many other mineral substances. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 696,799.
