Abstract

<PICT:0863413/III/1> A floor, e.g. a ship's deck, is surfaced by adhering thereto at least one layer of a foamed or aerated synthetic resin, and coating the exposed surface area of said layer, or at least the uppermost layer when more than one is present, with a waterproof, resin-based adhesive which will not chemically attack or otherwise react with the foamed or aerated synthetic resin. As shown, preformed blocks 6 of foamed or aerated synthetic resin e.g. a polyurethane, are affixed to the deck 5 by means of a waterproof, resin-based adhesive 7, e.g. an epoxy resin or a cold-curing unsaturated polyester resin in solution in styrene. The adhesive is preferably applied to the sides also of the blocks, as at 7a. The layer of adhesive on top of the blocks is preferably applied in one continuous run after the blocks have been laid. A surfacing layer 8 of linoleum, rubber or neoprene flooring, thermoplastic tiles, polyvinylchloride linoleum, cork tiles or composition comprising a latex of natural or synthetic rubber or a thermoplastic such as polyvinyl acetate, a cement powder and inert fillers, may be applied over the blocks, or may be applied on one side of the blocks individually before they are laid. In other embodiments (not shown) a reinforcement, such as hessian or wire netting, is laid on top of the resinbased adhesive or between successive layers of the composition, the upper surface of the composition is covered with a sealing compound, e.g. a polyvinyl compound or rubber, applied in a fluid condition, e.g. by brushing, or washing on with a cloth, the foamed or aerated synthetic resin is applied by spraying and/or trowelling and/or brushing and subsequently coated with the waterproof resinbased adhesive, a layer of composition is laid on the floor beneath the layer of foamed or aerated synthetic resin, or two or more layers of foamed or aerated synthetic resin are used, which differ among themselves in rigidity, e.g. a lower yielding and an upper rigid layer. The paste is a prepared and stabilised latex emulsion based on natural rubber, or a synthetic rubber, e.g. neoprene, or a thermoplastic, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, or any combination of the three. The powder is a cement powder or mixture of cement powders, e.g. portland or aluminous cement, together with inert siliceous materials, and optionally pigments.
