Abstract

<PICT:0863393/III/1> A multiple-effect evaporating plant of the vapour compression type is divided into a plurality of sections connected in parallel between a source of liquid to be evaporated and the inlet of a vapour compressor, and is provided with heat exchange elements connected in parallel with the outlet of the vapour compressor, means being provided for selectively isolating the sections and descaling the heat exchange element of an isolated section by cold-shocking or soaking without interrupting the operation of the entire plant. In the plant shown, for the distillation of pre-heated sea-water, the sections 1 are connected in parallel to each of lines 2, 3, 4 and 5 for brine suction, hot sea water feed, cold sea water feed, and drainage respectively. Each section 1 contains a heat exchange coil 8 between line 9 leading from the outlet of the compressor 7 and line 10 leading to a distilled water collector. The steam produced in each section is led off by line 6 to be compressed and utilized to heat the next charge of liquor before being removed from the plant. When any section is to be shocked valve 14 is opened and valves 15, 11, and 12 are closed. Valves 16, 13 and 14 are then operated to effect the shocking, after which a fresh charge of hot sea water is introduced and heated by heat exchange element 17 through which exhaust gases from a diesel or other engine are passed. Soaking is effected by closing valves 11, 12, 14, 15 and 16 and leaving a coil 8 to soak, after which element 17 restores the water to operating temperature. Soaking may precede shocking, if desired. Where soaking only need be effected the cold sea water feed 4 and valves 14 are omitted.
