Abstract

863,256. Hydrogenated polymers of butadiene. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. Nov. 25, 1959 [Dec. 4, 1958], No. 39991/59. Class 2(6). A linear solid polymer of butadiene or of its copolymer with up to 30% total monomers of styrene, has its unsaturation reduced to less than 30% of its original by hydrogenation and has at least 90% of its C 4 units combined in the polymer by 1À4 addition. The polymer may be prepared in the presence of organo metallic catalyst systems, e.g. lithium hydride and organo lithium compounds such as methyl, isopropyl, nbutyl, t-octyl, n-decyl, phenyl naphthyl, 4- butylphenyl, 4-phenyl butyl, p-totyl, cyclohexyl, and 4-butyl cyclohexyl, lithiums or dilithiomethane, 1-2-dilithio butane, 1, 3, 5-trilithiocyclohexane, and 1, 3, 5, 8-tetralithiodecane. Other specified catalysts are mixtures of a complex aluminium hydride of an alkali metal and titanium tetraiodide, mixtures of a trialkyl aluminium and a tri- or tetrahalide of a Group IV metal, and mixtures of an organometal compound of formula R n M, where R is an alkyl radical, and M is mercury, or zinc, and titanium tetra-iodide. The polymerization is preferably carried out in hydrocarbon solution e.g. benzene, toluene, alkyl benzene, propane, nbutane, n-pentane, isopentane, n-hexane, ischexane, 2, 2, 4-trimethylpentane, n-decane, cyclohexane, methycyclohexane and mixtures thereof. The hydrogenation may be batch-wise or continuous using a nickel-kieselguhr catalyst preferably at 250‹-600‹F. at 100 to 1,000 p.s.i.g. pressure. Specification 788,967 is referred to.
