In an electrode boiler of the wholly-immerseu electrode type the (or each) electrode 23 is disposed in an insulating well 25 and a tubular insulating displacement body 29 is provided which can be lowered to different depths in the well 25 and which restricts the crosssectional area of the current path from the electrode 23 to a neutral sleeve 27 in a region between the displacement body 29 and the sides of the well 25, the length of which region varies with the depth of the displacement body. Water is fed to the well 25 through a passage 24 directed towards the lower end of the electrode 23. The well 25 and body 29 may be tapered, and the neutral sleeve 27 may be attached to a plate 30 supporting the body 29 so as to move therewith. The arrangement provides a wide range of load regulation.
