Abstract

863,123. Photo-electric analysis of documents. BASSLER, F. July 2, 1957, No. 20867/57. Class 40(3) [Also in Group XIX] Apparatus for the photoelectric analysis of documents, cards, films, football pool coupons, &c., the surface of which is sub-divided into areas and on which data is recorded by marks selectively applied in such areas, wherein each area is scanned by a photo-cell responsive to light reaching it only from a small portion of the area to produce a substantial proportional change in the continuous unidirectional current of the photo-cell in accordance with each change of light intensity due to a mark, a signal proportional only to said change in current being derived and added to a predetermined proportion of the differential of the signal to produce a signal impulse which is caused to actuate registering or responding means whenever it exceeds a predetermined level. In the exemplified embodiment a football coupon, Fig. 5, in which a different twelve match forecast can be made in each of eight selection columns M-T, is analysed by apparatus including twelve photo-cells 10, Fig. 3 arranged in a pattern corresponding to the arrangement of marks for a correct forecast in a selection column. A further photo-cell 7 responds to control markings U on the coupon and serves to cause operation of the photo-cells 10 at each selection column M, N...T during the feed of the coupon beneath the photo-cells 10. The output of each of the photo-cells 10, for each selection column as it is scanned is processed to obtain the sum of the difference and differential signals to produce signal impulses which are applied to triggers 15, one corresponding to each photo-cell 10, only such triggers 15 which correspond to photocells 10 sensing a correct forecast being operated. The sum of the output of the triggers 15 is obtained, the highest score in any selection column on a coupon is taken and the coupon is then sorted by a flap type sorter in accordance with this highest score.
