862,571. Casting-processes. KNAPP MILLS Inc. Jan. 7, 1959 [May 5, 1958], No. 680/59. Class 83 (1). A method of forming a lead anti-radiation shield of substantially uniform density, comprises forming a layer of molten lead in an enclosure, cooling the layer to solidify it progressively from beneath, determining the condition of the surface of the solidified lead covered by molten lead by probing through the molten lead, and controlling the rate and direction of cooling in accordance with the findings of the probing to maintain a progressively increasing and substantially uniform thickness of solidified lead over the whole area of the layer. Preferably more molten lead is added while the surface of said laver is still molten. The lead may be cast into an enclosure comprising separate side-walls 5-8 on a table 3, and the cooling controlled by means such as burners 18 and air or water blasts 20. In a modification, Fig, 6, a container 40 is lead lined by the use of an inner container 41 which may, or may not, be removed after casting. The inner surface of the container 40 is first cleaned and solder or flux applied.
