Abstract

A bituminous composition which may be extruded when cold comprises bitumen powder, vinyl resin in powder form, finely divided filler, and a mineral oil which is a good solvent for bitumen at an elevated temperature but substantially a non-solvent for bitumen at room temperature, the bitumen powder, vinyl resin powder and filler being dispersed in the oil to form a paste. Vinyl resins comprise vinyl chloride polymers or copolymers thereof with, e.g., vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. A preferred composition contains, for every 100 parts by weight of bitumen powder, 10 to 60 parts vinyl resin, 50 to 150 parts mineral oil, and 5 to 50 parts of filler, e.g. clay, the filler comprising also up to 7 parts of surface-active silica. One part of monoethanolamine as stabilizing agent may be included. The composition is extruded on to a workpiece, e.g. to seal a gap in a car body, heated to 300 DEG F. and cooled to form a tough adherent coating.ALSO:A bituminous composition which may be extruded when cold comprises bitumen powder, vinyl resin in powder form, finely divided filler, and a mineral oil which is a good solvent for bitumen at an elevated temperature but substantially a non-solvent for bitumen at room temperature, the bitumen powder, vinyl resin powder and filler being dispersed in the oil to form a paste. The Provisional Specification describes also compositions of bitumen, polar oil and filler, the bitumen being first coated with the polar oil and, together with filler, dispersed, in a mineral oil with which the polar oil, e.g. castor oil, is immiscible.
