Abstract
862,340. Tractor - trailer draw gear. LARSEN, A. April 13, 1959 [May, 17, 1958], No. 12470/59. Class 103(5). Tractor-trailer draw gear which reduces the rearing moment on the tractor as the towing force increases comprises a traction arm 7 pivoted at 8 on either side of the tractor, an adjustable pre - stressed tension spring 11 pivoted to each arm at 12, traction arm guide plates 10, a detachable cross beam 9 which may rotate about its longitudinal axis, and a draw rod 22. When towing or starting to tow the connection point between the arms 7 and the rod 22 lowers as the towing force increases so that the rearing moment about the back axle of the tractor does not increase to : a dangerous value. In modifications the spring may be differently positioned or may even be dispensed with if the arms 7 are firmly fixed .at their front ends and made flexible. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 the arms 7 are stiffened by rails 17 mounting connecting pins 18 providing a lower connection than in Fig. 1. The arms 7 may however :be made of spring steel and be rigidly supported at 13, the arms providing their own resilient resistance by bending.
