Abstract

862,016. Powder metallurgy. YARDNEY INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. June 4, 1957 [June 11, 1956], No. 17750/57. Class 82(1) Apparatus for reducing a sheetof sintered metal particles comprises a flexible conveyer having a substantially horizontal portion moveable past feed means for depositing thereon a layer of powder and between rollers for compacting the powder, the conveyer member being deflected away from the compacted layer after passing between the rollers, and means for moving the separated layer through a heating chamber for sintering the particles. As shown in Fig. 1, flexible conveyer 309 e.g. of paper, is passed under a reciprocated feed shoot 302 for feeding a layer 205 of silver powder and carries the layer under doctor blades 311, 312 positioned in cascade to adjust the level of the layer. A flexible metal grid 101 is fed from roll 315 and merges with the powder ahead of rolls 316, 318 which compact the powder and press it into the interstices of the grid. The conveyer is deflected around roll 307 and is rewound on roll 308, the compacted strip passing on to endless conveyer 503 which carries it through sintering furnace 500, the furnace having a preheating compartment 504, sintering compartment 505 which maintains a temperature of 650- 800‹C. and a tempering compartment 506. The sintered layer then passes between reciprocating cutter 602 and anvil 604 to be cut into sections suitable for use as battery electrodes. Specification 692,731 is referred to.
