Abstract

The invention comprises diols having the general formula HO(CH2CH2O)xCH2C(R6)(R7) CH2(OCH2CH2)yOH wherein x is O or an integer, y is an integer, x+y does not exceed 5 and R6 and R7 are alkyl groups, and preferably R6 is methyl or ethyl and R7 is a C1-4 alkyl group. The compounds may be prepared by reacting one or more corresponding diols HOCH2C(R6)(R7)CH2OH with up to 5 mols. of ethylene oxide per mol. of starting diol. The oxyethylene diols are useful in the preparation of components of plasticizers and lubricants in which connection reference is made to Specifications 861,962, 861,963, 861,964 and 861,965. In an example, 4 mols. of neopentyl glycol are reacted with 7 mols. of ethylene oxide in the presence of ZnCl2 as catalyst at 160 DEG C.; the product is distilled and a fraction of oxyethylene diols of M.W. 180 is collected, corresponding to compounds of the above general formula wherein R6 and R7 represent methyl groups and x+y=about 1.7; the product is further distilled to obtain a fraction corresponding to a compound wherein R6 and R7 are methyl groups, x=0 and y=1. In the Provisional Specification no upper limit is placed on the sum x+y.
