Abstract
The invention comprises 2-bromo-1 : 1 : 1 : 2-tetrafluoroethane, and the preparation thereof by heating a compound of the general formula CXYZ-CHVBr (wherein each of X, Y and Z is Br, Cl or F; and wherein V is Br or F, but when X, Y and Z are all F, V is Br) with substantially anhydrous hydrogen fluoride at a temperature in the range 80-200 DEG C. in the presence of an antimony fluorochloride catalyst containing at least 20% of pentavalent antimony.ALSO:An "antimony fluorochloride" catalyst, for use in making 2-bromo-1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane from other pentahalogen ethanes (see Group IV (b)), comprises either a mixture of antimony fluorides and chlorides or a fluorochloride, some part of the catalyst containing pentavalent antimony. It is made by introducing into a reaction vessel hydrogen fluoride together with antimony pentachloride or an appropriate mixture of antimony trichloride and antimony pentachloride and heating them to bring about reaction.
