Class 20(3) A window regulator for moving a vehicle window guided to move in a predetermined compound path in the plane of the window between raised and lowered positions in guideways 21, 22, Fig. 1, within the vehicle comprises a travelling nut 51 on a vertical rotatable threaded shaft 47, rotated e.g. by an electric motor 43 through gearing 44, the nut 51 being linked to the lower edge 40 of the window by a linkage 62, Fig. 3, pivotally mounted at one end 65 to the nut on a pivot 64 perpendicular to the shaft 47 and at the other end 66 to the window panel edge portion 53 on a pivot 52 perpendicular to the plane of the window. When it is desired to give the window a transverse movement in addition to the movement parallel to the plane of the window as in the embodiment just described, the linkage shown in Fig. 8 is used and this comprises a lower link 146 pivoted to the travelling nut 130 on a pivot normal thereto and an upper link 143 secure to the window frame 136 by two spaced screws 158 and an intermediate link consisting of two members 144, 145 superposed on each other and pivoted together on a pivot 154, the member 144 being hinged to the upper link 143 on a hinge pin 147 parallel to the plane of the window 116 and the member 145 being hinged to the lower link 146 on a hinge pin 148 normal to the pivot 150. Such a mechanism is used when the window is curved as shown in Fig. 6, the window 135 being guided by rollers 139 running in guideways 133. These guideways are so shaped e.g. arcuate in a plane transverse to the window, as to permit the window to follow a path toward and away from the shaft 124 and the pivots 150, 154 permit the window to be driven forwardly in parallel to the plane of the window, and upwardly as the nut 130 advances up the shaft 124. Both mechanisms described have a toggle action when the window is nearing the fully raised position. The angle between the axis of the shaft 124, Fig. 7, and the line joining pivots 150 and 154 then approaching 45 degrees whereupon all or greater component of the force frorm the nut 130 to the pivot 154 is exerted in a forward direction for seating the window in a closed position.
