861,659. Surgical cuff inflators. MITCHELL, J. V. Dec. 5, 1958 [Sept. 6, 1957], No. 28149/57. Class 81 (2). [Also in Group XXVIII] An inflator specially de signed for use with a cuffed endotracheal tube comprises a hand pump having a valve 31 in its outlet and having a tapered outlet nozzle 21 for fitting into the inflation tube. Preferably the pump utilizes a bellows 24 and the endplate 23a has a central orifice 34 which can be occluded by the user's thumb during each compression stroke. The pump may thus be actuated by one hand. When the cuff is to be deflated, the cap 30 is unscrewed to allow the air to escape. The nozzle may have two tapered portions 29, 30 so that it may fit tubes of all diameters in normal use.
