Abstract
861,556. Making non-metallic tubes. POLYSTAR A.G. Sept. 16, 1959 [Sept. 25, 1958], No. 31613/59. Class 99(2). Tubular bodies are continuously produced from synthetic resins associated with a reinforcing and filling material by forming an initial support winding on a rotating conical surface, winding at least one strip of material comprising synthetic resin helically on to the support winding, the tubular body thus formed being continuously moved axially along the conical surface and subsequently hardened. As shown, a strip 6 of paper is helically wound on to an electrically or steam heated conical core 1 which is rotated by an electric motor 2, the overlapping edges of the strip being bonded together by an adhesive, such as epoxy or ethoxylene resins or polyurethanes, supplied through a bonding device 7, and the outer surface of the strip being sprayed with an adhesion-inhibiting medium such as silicone rubber by means of a nozzle 8. Alternatively, the core is wound with thin metal foil, thermoplastic foils of polyvinyl chloride, acetyl cellulose, polyester, epoxy, ethoxylene, phenol or silicone resins or with foam substances or mixtures thereof formed from polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene or polyurethane. Balsa wood or expanded cork may be combined with the plastic material. The overlapping edges of the strip 6 may be provided with interengaging corrugations or, in the case of thermoplastic strips, may be welded by means of hot air. A strip 9 of glass fibre or fabric which is soaked in a polyester resin, an ethoxylene resin or a polyurethane contained in a bath 12 is then helically wound on the surface 6a formed by the strip 6. More than one strip may be wound together or in succession. The outer surface of the strip is then sprayed with synthetic resin containing hardening agents and the tube is cured in a polymerisation chamber 22. Loose fibres may be applied to the tubular surface prior to hardening by means of nozzles 18, 19, 20 and the surface of the tube is smoothed by rollers 21 mounted around the tube. The finished tube is removed by means of rollers 23 and cut to the desired length by an automatically operated cutter 24. The winding and polymerisation steps may be repeated to form layers of different plastic material. The surface of the finished tube may be subjected to an after treatment by lacquering, coating, flaking, roughening or stamping. The initial support winding may also be formed by injecting plastic material in a heated revolving internally, conically-shaped sleeve from which it is released after polymerisation.
