Abstract
1,166,604. Moulding structural components; hollow laminates. BÍLKOW G.m.b.H. 5 Oct., 1966 [6 Oct., 1965], No. 44464/66. Headings B5A and B5N. [Also in Division B7] A structural component is made by sandwiching helically wound resin impregnated glass fibre tubing between outer skins. The tubing contains inner inflatable tubing which may be used to store liquids or which may be filled with foamed resin. In the example illustrated in the Figure an aerofoil is made by covering a core 1 with a resin-impregnated fibre layer 2, e.g. a fibreglass laminate, winding a fibre resin tube 3 containing an inflated tube 7 on to the covered core, deflating tube 7, applying an outer fibre resin layer 5, e.g. a fibreglass laminate, and inserting the assembly thus formed into a mould to cure the resin. During this step the tube 7 is reinflated to force the windings of the tube 9 together. The tube 7 is then deflated and core 1 removed. By varying the compression force of the mould and the degree to which the tube 7 is inflated the tube 3 is hardened in varying cross-sectional shapes (see Figures 3-5, not shown). In a second embodiment (see Figure 2, not shown) a series of covered individual cores are wrapped with fibre resin tube and covered by a single outer layer. Longitudinal reinforcement is interposed between the tube and the outer layer.
