Abstract

Acetylene is recovered from gases also containing hydrocarbon impurities and other gases by contacting with a heavy naphtha absorbent to remove hydrocarbon impurities and then with liquid ammonia to absorb acetylene and recovering the acetylene from the resultant solution. The heavy naphtha may boil within the range 300-500 DEG F. and is contacted with the gas at 60 to -20 DEG F. and 30-200 p.s.i.a. in a mol. ratio to the gas of 0.01-10. Any dissolved acetylene is removed by stripping and recycled following which the naphtha is separated from other dissolved gases and any high boiling polymers and recycled. The gas from the first absorption is preferably mixed with 0.01-0.06 mol. of ammonia per mol. of gas to prevent freezing and contacted with liquid ammonia at -95 DEG to 0 DEG F. and 20-180 p.s.i.a. Any dissolved ethylene together with some acetylene is stripped from the solution and recycled to the ammonia absorption step. The remaining acetylene is stripped from the ammonia and washed with water. Liquid ammonia is recycled, part being distilled to remove polymeric material.
