Abstract

The flat surface of wood or other cellulosic products presenting a smooth regular porous firm heat-insulating surface containing a heatplasticizable material is glossified by rubbing the said flat surface with a fast moving rubbing <PICT:0861347/III/1> medium having a flexible substantially unabrasive heat-insulating frictional rubbing surface which moves toward and away from said flat surface through a concavo-convex path with the convex side intimately and firmly pressed by a backing member against said flat surface while traversing it, controlling the magnitude of the traversing speed to provide rubbing contact of momentary order at successive areas of said flat surface, and correlatively controlling the magnitudes of the rubbing pressure against, and the rubbing speed relatively to, said flat surface at values causing said rubbing medium to generate frictional heat on said flat surface at the elevated temperature level required for plasticizing the said heat-plasticizable material without plasticizing the underlying material throughout its depth and to glossify said flat surface during said contact time. The surface may first be coated with a surface-penetrating plastic and finishing additive having the properties of being heatplasticizable at temperatures elevated substantially above room temperature and in a hardened state at room temperature after heat-plasticization, and then subjected to the glossifying operation. Suitable plastic materials include phenol-formaldehyde resins, melamineformaldehyde resins, urea-formaldehyde resins, heat-convertible alkyd resins, and polyester resins; also thermoplastic materials such as polyamides, vinylidenechloride - acrylonitrile resins, trifluoro chloroethylene, vinyl chlorideacetate resins, vinyl formal resins, methyl methacrylate resins and polymethyl alphachloro acrylate resins. The coating may be applied by brushing, spraying, or rolling a suspension or solution of plastic on to the surface, and the solvent is allowed to evaporate before glossifying. As shown, a panel 4 to be glossified travels along a conveyer 1, 2 under a roller 15 which is weighted so as to apply pressure thereto. An endless belt 12 composed of cork or containing a cork surface arranged around two drums 10, 13 is pressed against the underside of the wooden panel at a point opposite to the feed roller. The drums rotate so as to move the endless belt in a direction opposite to the direction of motion of the wooden panel. The speed of rotation of the rollers 10 and 13 is such that the linear speed of the endless belt is considerably greater than that of the wooden panel. Instead of the endless belt other means such as a cylindrical cotton buffing wheel having an axial length equal to or exceeding the width of the surface to be treated may be used.
