Abstract

861,302. Moulding fibre-reinforced synthetic resin tubes. HANUSCH, H. July 29, 1957 [Aug. 1, 1956; April 2, 1957], No. 23890/57. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXVIII] Fibre-reinforced tubes are produced by spraying a mixture of cut fibres and synthetic resin on to a mandrel moving in a longitudinal direction. As shown in Fig. 1, a tubular mandrel 1 of expansible material, e.g. synthetic rubber, is held by guides 2, 3 and sprayed by three or four nozzles 6 which are periodically partially rotated around the mandrel. Setting of the sprayed mixture is effected by two-part heated pressing rools 7, 8, the rams of which are arranged at right angles and are movable both radially and longitudinally with respect to the mandrel. During spraying, the mandrel may be expanded by hydraulic or air pressure applied through a conduit 4 to facilitate removal of the finished tube. The mandrel may be made of or have a jacket of e.g. silicone rubber in order to obtain a smooth inner surfaced tube. The circular passage formed between the pressing rams may be cone shaped at the end nearest the spray nozzles in order to make smoother seams between successive stages of the tube. Fabric strands or bands may be applied before or after spraying either by plain wrapping or couble cross winding. In the example shown in Fig. 2 the mandrel 1 is simultaneously rotated and moved longitudinally by means of carriages 10, 11 which are spaced apart by a tubular frame 14, and run on rails 9. The resin and fibre mixture sprayed on the mandrel 1 by spray head 6 is polymerised in a heating chamber 20 and then smoothed by a draw nozzle 18 which is rotatable in a stationary holding ring 19. A fibre band reinforcement 21 coated with resin alone or a resin-fibre mixture by a spray head 22 is wound on, a further spray of resin applied by a nozzle 25 and then a cover foil band 24 applied. 23 is a setting chamber. A coating of, e.g. ethoxylin resin or silicone resin applied by a nozzle 30 and partly or completely set in a heated chamber 26, improves the imperviousness of the finished tube. This coating may be replaced by a foil sleeve applied to the mandrel before expansion of the mandrel, and then, preferably, given an adhesive coating. Removal of the tube from the mandrel may be facilitated by applying a vacuum to the interior of the mandrel. Alternatively a thin sleeve of polytetrafluoroethylene, cellulose acetate or hard P.V.C. may be applied to the mandrel and the finished tube separated from this sleeve by blowing air therebetween if necessary.
