Abstract

861,225. Photo-electric gauging. LASTEX YARN & LACTRON THREAD Ltd. June 26, 1957 [June 28, 1956], No. 19998/56. Class 40 (3). The variations in diameter of a thread or other filamentary material 22 moving over an aperture 24 in a screen 23 are detected by a phototransistor unit 26 which receives light via the aperture from a source 25. The A.C. component of the phototransistor output signal, which has an amplitude which varies with the variations in thread diameter, is applied with a superimposed 3 kc/s. signal from the oscillation 28 to an amplifier 32 which is biased to limit signals exceeding predetermined positive and negative valves (waveform 33). The amplifier output is applied to a H.P. filter 34 which removes the original photo-transistor signal whereby its output consists of a 3 kc/s. signal which drops to zero when a variation in thread diameter produces a signal exceeding the value which produces a limiting action in the amplifier 32. This signal is amplified and rectified in a voltage doubling circuit 38. The circuit 38 provides a negative output which is applied with a fixed positive bias to the grid of a trigger valve 40 which fires when the 3 kc/s. signal drops to zero. The trigger valve operates a neon indicator, an audible alarm or stops the thread processing line and continues to conduct until manually reset.
