The apparatus and method for recording signals on a stress-sensitive magnetic medium according to the parent Specification are modified by the use, in place of or in conjunction with the magnetic field, of an electric conditioning field in a conductive magnetic tape the required magnetization is induced by the current derived from a steady field, while in a ceramic ferrite or other non-conductive tape it is induced by the local currents arising from an alternating or pulsating field.
