Abstract

Sulphur is separated from a sulphur ore of a quality between 50 and 75 weight per cent of sulphur and of particle size all through 80-mesh B.S.S. by heating the ore in water or an aqueous calcium, magnesium, or zinc chloride solution to melt the sulphur, permitting cooling to solidify the sulphur, and classifying to separate the sulphur fraction of above 80 mesh particle size. The sulphur ore may be naturally occurring, filter cake containing sulphur, partially purified sulphur, oxide from gas plants, or any mixture of sulphur with inorganic waste, in which the sulphur content may be adjusted to 50-75% by adding pure sulphur or inorganic silicate. The ore may be comminuted to the desired size, preferably larger than 300 mesh and generally smaller than 100 mesh. The ore is placed in water or a concentrated chloride solution in a vol. ratio liquid to solid 3 : 1 to 10 : 1, and is heated with agitation at 125-135 DEG C., if necessary, under pressure. After cooling, the solid may be separated into two fractions, greater and smaller than 80 mesh, or into three fractions greater than 60 mesh, 60-80 mesh, and smaller than 80 mesh. The largest size fraction is pure sulphur, is washed, and may be further purified by fusion filtration, while the smallest size fraction is inorganic waste and may be leached with hot chloride solution. The middle fraction of a three-fraction separation may be recycled. The process may be batch or continuous.
