860,578. Gear-cutting; copy-milling; milling-cutters. WICKHAM PRODUCTS CORPORATION. Jan. 5, 1959, No. 398/59. Class 83 (3). A tool for cutting splines or gears comprises an internally-toothed cutter 22 freely-rotatable about an axis which, in use, is inclined to that of the work 10. The cutter may have one or more teeth which may be regularly or irregularlysized and positioned. It is secured to a head 23 by a nut 24. The head 23 is freely-rotatable on a plate 14. The plate is adjustable laterally and angularly about a point c lying in the face of the cutter, on a mounting-block 12, by pins 17 engaged by screws 18. Screws 13 clamp the plate 14 to the block 12, which may be carried in a turret. In operation, the leading-tooth only is in cutting-engagement with the work, and the cutter is rotated by its engagement with the work. In a modification, the cutter 22, Fig. 5, is secured to a gear 21<SP>1</SP> which is positivelyrotated through a universal coupling 28 from the drive 30 to the work. Helical grooves or gears may be cut.
