Abstract

Olefins are polymerized at low pressures by catalysts consisting of organo-metallic compounds and compounds of the transition metals with recycling of the olefin to be polymerized by exposing the olefin at a lower than polymerization temperature to liquefying pressures, the liquid olefin being introduced into the polymerization reactor without expansion where the pressure conditions are such that it evaporates in a quantity sufficient for the removal of the heat evolved in the polymerization, the olefin then being withdrawn and returned to the liquefaction cycle. In addition to this olefin, further olefin may be circulated through the system. The pressure may be the same throughout the circulation and solvents having a boiling point of more than 120 DEG C. are preferably used. Propylene and butene-1 are specified olefins, while the usual Ziegler-type catalysts are listed. The process may be carried out in the absence of a solvent (two such examples are given) while apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
