860,183. Measuring mass by radioactivity. POWELL, G. F. W., and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Jan. 17, 1957 [Jan. 17, 1956], No. 1564/56. Class 40 (3). A device for measuring the mass of loose tobacco filler 2 moving along a trough comprises two reversely arranged radioactive scanning devices 4, 7 spaced apart along the trough, the ray-responsive parts 6, 8 of the scanning devices being connected electrically to combine their outputs. Each scanning device comprises a beta-ray emitter in the form of a strip 5A of radioactive material obliquely disposed across the filler and an ionization chamber 6 of the adjustable type described in Specification 860,187. The ionization chambers may be joined in parallel as in Fig. 1 (Complete Speci fication, not shown), a third chamber being included in the circuit to act as a balancing device. Alternatively, as in Fig. 2 (not shown), the outputs from the two chambers may be added and averaged. In both cases the net output may be used to control the feed rate of the moving filler. The filler T, Fig. 5, may be carried by a paper web P with upturned edges, and the web may be supported on a slotted plate, according to the Provisional Specification.
