Abstract
860,027. Tipping trailers; road vehicle spring suspensions. MORSE, R. L., and GLICK, J. L. Aug. 8, 1958, No. 25577/58. Classes 108(1) and 108(2). A tipping semi-trailer having a fifth wheel coupling to which is pivoted a jack 33 and draw bars 35, is provided with links 39 pivoted at 38 and 40 which when the trailer is tipped press down upon the front end of a chassis member 16 carrying the pivot 24 and cause the pivot to either remain at its normal height or rise slightly. The upper chassis member 16 is connected at its forward end through a bracket 29 to a spring 27, and is provided with arms 30 and bosses 31 by which it is pivoted at 32 to the lower chassis member 17. The member 17 is connected at one end to an axle 25 and at its other end to the rear of the spring 27 so that movement may take place between the chassis members 16 and 17. In Fig. 7 the links 39 are replaced by an hydraulic jack 39a pivoted at 40a on struts depending from the member 16. In other modifications the chassis comprises a single member, and the link 39 may either be pivoted at a different position on the draw bars 35 or be replaced by link work having a toggle action. In yet a further modification, Fig. 10, the link 39 is lengthened so that a single chassis member supported on a single axle may be tilted during tipping from the normal dotted position to the full line position wherein the pivot 24 is raised. The means for tipping may comprise screws, chains, cables or the like for pulling the tractor and trailer toward each other or an external hoist acting directly on the front of the body. The trailer suspension comprises a spring 27, Fig. 1, having a floating connection at 29 with the upper frame member 16, and a pivotal connection at 28 with the under frame member 17, the frames 16, 17 being pivotally connected together by struts 30 and a shaft 32. The rear axle 25 is mounted directly on the frame 17 and a link 47 connects the axle 26 to the front portion of the frame 16. In Fig. 7, pivots 129 and links 45 permit tilting of the frame 16 with respect to the frame 17. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 792,094.
