859,917. Gas turbine plant. STANDARD MOTOR CO. Ltd., and HAMBLING, S. K. May 13, 1958 [May 20, 1957], No. 15887/57. Class 110 (3). A gas turbine power plant comprises an annular heat exchanger to which air from the compressor is passed through a first annular duct, and exhaust gases from the turbine are passed through a second annular duct, the two annular ducts being disposed one within the other to define therebetween a toroidal chest into which heated air from the heat-exchanger passes and from which the air passes into a combustion chamber, combustion gases discharging from the latter tangentially into a toroidal chamber disposed within the toroidal chest, the gases passing from the toroidal chamber to the turbine. The engine shown comprises a centrifugal compressor 40. and an inward flow radial turbine 41 mounted back-toback on a shaft 42, also a separate power turbine 28 mounted on a shaft 43. Air under pressure is discharged from the compressor 40 through an annular diffuser duct formed between walls 23, 24 which changes the air flow from radial to axial. The air enters the heatexchanger 46 through an opening 52 in the plate 31, flows radially through the heat-exchanger as indicated by the arrows 34 and discharges through an opening 53 in the plate 31 into a toroidal-shaped chest 47. The pre-heated air then enters combustion chamber 48 and combustion gases issue tangentially therefrom into the toroidal chamber 26. The gases discharge from the chamber 26 in a radial direction through turbine inlet 50. The gases discharge from the turbine 41 in an axial direction and act on the power turbine 28. The exhaust gases from the turbine 28 flow as indicated by arrows 33 in a radial direction through heat-exchanger 46 and discharge to atmosphere at 54. Specification 848,095 is referred to.
